| | E3 Log Final | Travel | 2005-05-20 08:29:16 | By: Anotherfluke |   | The Sony Party. I don't have time to give a complete account, but for a brief summary, I shall make a short list of relevant numbers. These numbers also correspond to the number of reasons why I will do everything in my power to never miss one of these parties ever again.
8 bars, open
5 buffets, open
5 stages
12 sitting areas
1 dodger stadium/downtown LA backdrop
10 searchlights making sky patterns
1 laser mirrored into dozens
2 guitar players, bass players, drummers, singers on stage for an all-star band with rotating roster
1 Jimmy Eat World
1 Mexican Wrestling ring complete with masked mexican tag team wrestling (including a dude dressed up like a nasty female wrestler)
5 midgets in face paint to make up mini KISS
You do the math. | |   | | View Comments |   | Post A Comment
| | E3 Log. Finally! | Travel | 2005-05-19 02:40:58 | By: Anotherfluke |   | So, after my post of doom yesterday, I left Kinko's and tried to find Aaron. It turns out that after he left Kinko's he happened to walk by a European auto body shop. The guy drove out to the van, got it running (it was the fuel pump), drove it to his shop, and "un-repaired" the work that had been done before we left, which got the fuel pump going again. The alternator it turns out had also gone bad, so we did do the right thing by replacing the alternator, but in the process of replacing it, the fuel pump did it's thing. After that little mess was cleaned up it was about 3 in the afternoon.
Being still 100 miles outside of LA, Aaron wanted to go to Ventura to check out the Marina and city there (He wants to moor his sailboat down there), so we did that, and drove the last 50 or so miles down beautiful Highway 101, one of the routes used in North By Northwest. ^_^
We finally showed up at Aaron's friend's house around 9:30 pm, and after some much needed showering (3 days and 2 engine repairs later), we went out to eat, then went to bed in preparation for Today.
So far I have spent most of the day gathering business cards. Afterwords I will memorize the cards, and go around with my business cards trying to actually talk to the many PR/Marketing/Event Coordinators who have been so busy today. Once that is done I might actually have time to look at the games and new systems. Xbox 360 and PS3 are both being shown behind closed doors, so I may not bother with the multiple hour waits to see them, but I would like to try.
More later.

| | E3 Log. Scratch That. Bakersfield Log | Travel | 2005-05-18 02:00:35 | By: Anotherfluke |   | So here I am in Bakersfield California, about a hundred miles outside of LA. Aaron's van broke down, and we're waiting to get it fixed before heading on down to E3. The lame part is that this is not the first time this trip that the vanagon has petered out on us.
The first time was near Grant's Pass in Oregon. The van started losing power while driving, the same thing that happened last year (when we had to push start the van). This year, same as last, I told Aaron it was the sparkplugs, and finally, he begrudgingly pulled in to Medford, and we replaced the spark plugs, rotor, and distributer cap in front of an auto parts store. Lo and behold the van ran fine afterwards (Don't ask Aaron about it, he's still bitter).
The van ran fine until last night at about 11:00pm, when we were in the final stretch of Valley before the Grapevine and LA. The battery light came on, indicating that the battery wasn't being charged, so we pulled over for the night (so the headlights wouldn't drain the battery), and took a 19 mile detour to Bakersfield where we found a Kragen (sister store to Schucks) and replaced the Alternator, but now we aren't able to get the van to start. So here I am, having walked 2 miles to Kinkos so I can check my email and charge my long dead phone long enough to be able to make a few emergency calls, while thousands of happy people are busy playing Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 and Nintendo Revolution games at E3. Not that I'm bitter or anything.
Actually, it's not too bad. I take it all as part of the adventure of road tripping, and really, it's ok. I still have two days to enjoy E3 (and make my Sakura-Con connections), so as long as I have that, I won't mind a detour. Hell I don't even mind the fact that I haven't showered since Monday.
But if We're not in LA by 8:00am tomorrow there'll be hell to pay.

| | Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony Oh My! | Travel | 2005-05-12 07:26:16 | By: Anotherfluke |   | So this Monday I'm leaving to go to E3 again. This will be my 4th year attending. I'm looking forward to going because I actually have an agenda this time around. I'll be scouting for potential exhibitors and sponsors for Sakura-Con. I also have a hidden agenda, but we'll see how far that actually gets. Anyways, I just wanted to say that while I'm down there I'll do my best to update LJ and TKS with info and maybe pics as often as possible.
And I promise to not get all cocky like I did when I went to Puerto Vallarta.

| | Puerto Vallarta pt. 2 | Travel | 2004-11-01 12:38:49 | By: Anotherfluke |   | Snorkeling was awesome! I loved every minute of it, even the first time when I picked fins that were too tight and gave myself a toe cramp. We bought an underwater camera, so hopefully those pictures will turn out. Saw some coral, lots of tropical fish, an eel, and a couple of stingrays.
Afterwards we headed home and took a nap before going to Melacon (the boardwalk touristy district) to watch a live band and drink some corona. Afterwards we headed to Hilo´s, a huge but crowded night club where we got manhandled for awhile. Some mexican celebrity was there too, and had all the girls swooning.
This morning we woke up and headed down for a breakfast buffet before spending some time at the church for Dia De Los Angelitos (Day of the Dead for children), and then walking through the flea market on our way to do some shopping and getting the inside info from some ex-pats.
After we finish here we´re going to head to Los Tules for some swimming (ocean or pool, haven´t decided) before going up into the hills for dinner.
I heard the high in Seattle today is 51.
I know, I´m a bad person.

| | Puerto Vallarta pt. 1 | Travel | 2004-10-30 11:41:01 | By: Anotherfluke |   | I'm sitting in an internet cafe in Old Town Puerto Vallarta after having just finished a breakfast at Casa de los pancakes.
It's beautiful down here. I took some pictures which can be temporarily found at http://www.kindstranger.com/pv. Yesterday Tina and I participated in the release of hundreds of endangered baby turtles into the ocean, it was incredible! (check pics 1459-1486). Today we're walking around downtown, and tomorrow we'll be going snorkeling. Wheee!
I'll post a more detailed version later on in the week. Hope it's not too rainy and dark in Seattle :P

| | E3 Trip Wrap Up | Travel | 2004-05-20 01:18:53 | By: Anotherfluke |   | Not that anyone is still reading, but I thought I'd finish out the journal of my trip for future reference...
After I left Kinkos in Reno in the evening, we went to Cal-Neva casino and played cards for a couple hours. I wound up winning 7 dollars woo! Afterwards we hit up the Purple Parrot restaurant in Atlantis Casino, where I ordered way too much food. We finally got home around 3am and promptly passed out. I woke up at 11am (checkout time) and called to extend so we wouldn't be overcharged. The fellow running the inn was a good guy, and we got started on our way to my Reservation.
Upon reaching Lovelock, I pulled in, excited to find out what happened to the vote by the Tribal Council, and to meet Harry. It turned out that Harry hadn't submitted my name for enrollment, and had left two days prior to go watch a boxing match in Reno, and wouldn't be home until Monday (this was Saturday). I only found this out after scouring the reservation for people, and asking them questions until I found someone who was a part of the council and wasn't in reno watching boxing (this person turned out to be Stephanie, the secretary). After receiving this disappointing news, Aaron and I drove around the town for awhile, and finally headed home.
We took I-80 up to I-95, which meant going through the highland desert of Oregon. The road is way more interesting (mainly because it is bereft of civilization: gas stations are approximately 150 miles apart), and halfway through we pulled off on a dirt road and parked for the night. We awoke the next morning to find that we were miles from anywhere (I took a panorama shot), so we pushed on through Burns, Bend, (two national forests), and Portland until we hit I-5 and finally arrived home at 6pm. I quickly showered and went to Anime Night.
And that's the story of my trip! I waited until today to post this because I finally got the optimized pictures added to my photo gallery. In addition to the current pictures, I also finally added links for the past 2 E3s, and you can find links for all of them on the photo gallery page on the left. Thanks for looking, and please drop me a line or post a comment.

| | E3: Day 3: Yosemite National Park | Travel | 2004-05-14 22:59:52 | By: Anotherfluke |   | After we left Kinkos yesterday, we got on the road for Reno. I was disappointed at not being able to spend more time in LA, and missing out on the last day of E3, and Aaron and I got into an argument about it. After about an hour of 'discussion', we settled down, and worked out a plan for the following day. Instead of driving straight to Reno, we decided to head to Yosemite National Park. We moved over to hwy 99 (which, by the way has much cheaper gas), and then moved to hwy 41. Before we hit Yosemite National Park but after we got into Sierra National Forest, we found a service road and parked for the night (It's illegal to camp in National Parks, but it's legal to do so anywhere in a national forest). Once morning came we headed into the park proper, where I proceeded to take a ton of pictures. At some point in the future I need to go back and spend a week or so in Yosemite park.
We drove over the pass (hitting the highest elevation at 9,945 ft), and headed back down. Even at 9000 feet, it was a beautiful day. We stopped at a lake by the foot of a mountain patched with snow. I laid down on a giant slab of granite warmed by the sun, and listened to the birds and the water for about a half an hour before leaving. Absolutely a beautiful day.
Afterwards we hit Mono Lake, which had the strangest ground in the world. It was covered in Salt which was weird, and around the entire shore of the lake are thousands of Brine flies, harmless to humans, that cover the beaches. The ground itself was spongey, and seemed rusted in spots. Truly a strange place.
Afterwards, we headed for Reno, stopping in Coleville to grab a bite to eat. I ordered a "Big Ed's Burger", and aaron and I gave pieces of the bun to a bird that plucked it out of our hands.
Finally, arriving in Reno at about 6pm, we walked around downtown checking hotel prices. Reno is more expensive than Las Vegas! We picked a small hotel just off the main road, and headed for Kinkos. Ok that's all, time to go gamble. Oh, and here are the links for the new pictures...

| | E3: Day 2 part 2 | Travel | 2004-05-13 19:36:49 | By: Anotherfluke |   | After I stopped by the WiFi lounge to update, I hit up South Hall and Kentia Hall. While I was browsing around the Distributors' booths, I got an idea. Lots of these distributors sell DDR pads. So I went and found one of the aforementioned distributors, and asked them if they were interested in doing business as sponsors or exhibitors. I asked if they were interested in sponsoring something like a DDR tournament by letting the SC staff put up a banner of theirs in exchange for a couple of hard pads on which to do the tournament. I asked every booth that looked like it might have some affiliation with anime or usefullness in the wired, and asked them if they were interested in sponsorship, exhibiting, or promoting their wares. I got a lot of positive responses, so hopefully when I bring this up to squeek, she'll be interested too!
Anyways, afterwards we headed back to Hollywood. Aaron was only interested in leaving, so I think we'll probably be going to Reno after I get done typing this. I'm kind of disappointed, I wanted to go out tonight, and drive around LA and have some fun, but I think that ship has sailed. Alas. I'll add more when I get to a computer again.
Also, the photo gallery has been updated with the new photos. Click on the Photo Gallery Link to the left for pictures.

| | E3: Day 2 part 1 | Travel | 2004-05-13 12:58:40 | By: Anotherfluke |   | Just to quickly follow up with last night. After I got back from Kinkos, Aaron was still asleep, so I told him to call me if he got up later and I headed off. made it about 8 blocks down Sunset before hitting Hollywood blvd, when Aaron called. He got ahold of his friend Shari and she was coming to meet us. We found a band (Telecast) playing at Star Shoes on Hollywood, and decided to stay there. After Shari arrived with her friend Robert (it took forever for them to find us), we had a few drinks, then headed back to the hotel around 1.
Anyways, we got up around 8:30, and went to Denny's for breakfast, then headed over to the show. I'm going to try to get all of my stuff done today so we can leave tonight to go to Reno. If we do that, we'll stay in Reno for a day, then head over to my tribe to visit for another day. I am so excited to be going! Ok, more later after the show. Oh yeah, I've posted a ton of pictures from the West Hall (Nintendo and Sony's booth). Check them out (unoptomized again, fyi).

| | E3: Day 1 | Travel | 2004-05-12 20:41:32 | By: Anotherfluke |   | Ok, first things first:
Ok, on to the rest.
Aaron and I left a little late, around 4:30pm on the 11th (the day before the expo started). We marathoned our way down with virtually no sleep, making it here in 19 hours. We then went to work procuring a hotel (we had no reservation). My usual econo lodge in Hollywood was overbooked, so no chance there; we finally settled for a nasty motel that has loose plumbing fixtures and the kind of beds that make Aaron's van feel like the ritz. I got to take a shower with a spider, yay!
Afterwards we went to the LA Convention center to register for the expo. Registration was no problem so I headed straight for Kentia hall to meet up with Joe and other DP folk who were hosting the gaming museum at E3 this year. Joe was really busy talking to a guy who had a badge labeled "SuperPass" so I figured it best to chat with him later, but I ran into Laura and Mike, whom I actually hung out with at last year's expo. We chatted for awhile, then I met Aaron and we went to a meeting with Eleanor from Game Source, who schooled us in the ways of business secrets. Afterwards we went to the Palm, where Aaron ordered lobster and I ordered chicken piccata (not as good as Trattoria Mitchelli's and twice as much), prompting the waiter to outfit Aaron with the above ensemble. Plus I got a cool thing for Kate.
After eating, Aaron was done for, so I spent some time shaving, and headed out to do my email and update. On the way I met Jeannine and Annikah, two girls from Germany who were travelling around the world. I gave them my number so hopefully I'll hear from them later tonight or tomorrow. After that I headed to Kinkos and began typing this update. So yeah that's it for now. I'd tell you more but it's really expensive to do this stuff at Kinkos, besides I got some drinking and screwing off to do. But, before I go, here's the link to the rest of the pics I've taken today (careful they are un-optomized, read: big!).

| | Back From San Francisco... | Travel | 2004-03-25 10:19:43 | By: Anotherfluke |   | Ok, here is the full update as promised. For those who don't know what
happened, I went with Kate to San Francisco on a whim. We left on Thursday right
after my last day of work at a temp job (blah), and drove straight to San
Francisco, arriving early in the morning Friday. We stayed until Tuesday morning
at which point we left to stop in Napa Valley so Kate could visit with one of
her friends, then drove back via the scenic route, finally making it home early
Wednesday morning. For those uninterested in every detail, here's a quick
rundown of what we did.
Friday -
- Chinatown
- Union Square
- Civic Center Park
- Steve's Restaurant
- Olympic Hotel
- Red's Corner
Saturday -
- Pier 39 (The Wharf)
- SF Aquarium
- SF Bay Cruise
- Ripley's Believe it or Not!
- Les Julian Jazz Restaurant
- Red's Corner
Sunday -
- Haight Ashbury
- Amoeba Records
- Some Breakfast place
- SFMOMA (Museum of Modern Art)
- Cartoon Art Museum
- The Metreon
- Red's Corner
Monday -
- Lori's 50's Diner
- Virgin Records
- Pearl's
- Golden Gate Park
- Baker's Beach
- Muir Woods Redwood Forest
- Red's Corner
Tuesday -
- St. Helena, Napa Valley
- Home
Most of these events are forever recorded in the Photo Gallery linked right
HERE.
Basically, much fun was had by all, despite a few setbacks. For me,
probably the best day of the trip was Saturday. Or maybe Sunday. It
was beautiful down there the whole time, so much sunlight my forehead got a
small burn. I also met a lot of interesting people at Red's Corner including the bassist for the Pop Alternative band
LowRise, a crossdressing bartender
named Tommy, and the nicest homeless guy you'll ever meet, Earl (he just got out
of jail).
I'm now also of the opinion that San Francisco can be a weekend thing.
You get four people, leave Friday at 8am, arrive at 8pm, go out Fri and Sat
night, then leave at noon on Sunday, and get home Sunday at midnight.
Split 4 ways it would only be about 40 bucks each for gas and 40 bucks each for
hotel. 80 dollars for a weekend in San Francisco sounds alright to me!
Let me know when you want to go, I'm down. ~N | |   | | View Comments |   | Post A Comment
| | Just a quick update | Travel | 2004-01-29 03:13:07 | By: Anotherfluke |   | I haven't really updated since I got back because for some reason I can't seem to get my ass off the ground and take care of all the things I need to do. I'm going to try to get the ball rolling tomorrow. If you can read this, you know I'm no longer working at Nintendo, so I need to file for unemployment while I look for another job, then I've also got this whole credit card fraud thing to finish working out. Also, we're in the middle of rearranging our living room (quite the task), and my room is dirty as all hell. And to top it all off, I've still got to do laundry!
When will the madness end?!?!??? | |   | | View Comments |   | Post A Comment
| | I'm back. | Travel | 2004-01-25 16:11:10 | By: Anotherfluke |   | After 8 days and several thousand miles, I've returned, tired as hell and without clean clothes. I had a good time, despite worrying a bit about whether hanging around Aaron for 8 days straight would be straining. It was from time to time, but not that bad; I'd do it again in a heartbeat.
Just to recap, here's the itinerary: We left on Friday the 16th at 11pm. Drove straight to LA, and into Hermosa beach where we stayed with Aaron's friend Josh. For 2 days we wandered around Hermosa and Redondo beach, then left on the morning of the third day for San Diego. On the way we stopped in Laguna Beach by my request and spent some time at the tide pools and walking around. We pulled in to San Diego late that afternoon and spent the evening living it up in the Gaslamp district (we watched the local weatherman play trombone at Croches, a Jazz bar). We slept on the beach at Escondido, and spent the next morning driving to scenic points along the way. That evening we hit I-10 along the Mexican border on our way to Joshua tree. We took the scenic route, and by the time we hit the park, it was late so we decided to push on to Las Vegas.
We rolled in to Las Vegas at around 2am. We stayed at the Plaza, and spent 3 days and 4 nights (including the first night we pulled in at 2am) gambling, cavorting, and generally sinning. We left at 1am on Saturday, cutting across the desert into Bakersfield where we came up through the valley and over the pass to arrive back home at 4:30am this morning (Sunday the 25th). So there you have it.
Good to be back, btw, but damn I miss the Sun already :( | |   | | View Comments |   | Post A Comment
| | Vegas | Travel | 2004-01-21 15:34:10 | By: Anotherfluke |   | Instead of going to Joshua Tree, Aaron and I opted to head straight for Vegas. We rolled in last night, got a double room at The Plaza, and promptly changed it to two adjoining rooms. It is only 30 dollars a night, and for 2 rooms for 2 nights it only costs us 75 dollars, with a third night free, which breaks down to 12.50 per person per night, you can't beat that.Today has been largely wasted, however, since we got up late and Aaron doesn't know his way around. He wants to go to all the pawn shops and buy stuff, and he wants me to go with him. I wouldn't except that the van has acquired this nasty habit of forcing us to compression start it every once in awhile. Since we got here early and are probably going to leave late, I don't think it'll be a big deal though. No new pictures yet, but I'll post when I get more posted. Also, if I get a chance to spend more than 10 minutes on a computer (it's 12/hr at kinkos), I'll try to put together a map of all the places we've gone. | |   | | View Comments |   | Post A Comment | |
| | Do you know where El Cajon is? | Travel | 2004-01-20 16:09:52 | By: Anotherfluke |   | So I'm in an internet cafe off of Highway 8 just outside of Joshua Tree Park. The sun is going down, and I think we're going to the park, but Vegas is calling. I'm not sure what we'll be doing, but so far it's been fun. I spent last night in downtown San Diego (the gaslamp quarter) listening to jazz performed by the channel 9 weatherman. Earlier, we stopped in Laguna Beach, and checked out the tide pools. I wish I'd brought my camera with me then, there were hundreds of Urchins and anenome. Alas.
Anyways, the trip is half over, and before long I'll be in Vegas, then Lovelock. Cheers! | |   | | View Comments |   | Post A Comment
| | Pictures have been added *UPDATE* | Travel | 2004-01-18 19:41:18 | By: Anotherfluke |   | I spent the day down at Redondo Beach and Hermosa Beach. I'll be heading out in a bit to go grab some food and then hit up some bars. In the meantime I've added all the pictures I've taken so far. They aren't all that interesting, and I've taken a lot of duplicates, and They are as yet unoptomized, but if you want to see them, here they are:
www.kindstranger.com/photos/photo.php?sub=vegas2k4
*UPDATE* It's the morning after I wrote the original post, and I didn't want to add another post, so I'm updating. Last night we went to a place called The Kettle in Manhattan beach. It was an awesome restaurant open 24 hours. I'm definitely going to go back there next time I'm down here. I tried to take a picture with my phone but it didn't come out very well. I woke up this morning to some sunlight, so hopefully it will be nice and clear out today (it has been cloudy since we left the siskiyus). Regardless, however, it has been nice weather. Warm enough for me to walk around in a shirt, yet everyone else is bundled up hehe.
Today we'll be heading down to Laguna beach, then to San Diego. Aaron wants to spend the next day or so looking at apartment prices, and I'm inclined to help him. We'll probably go to the San Diego Zoo and Aquarium tomorrow, then it's off to Las Vegas for 2 days so Aaron can hit up the pawn shops, and I can play some blackjack. I want to go see a show, but they are always really expensive... Finally, after Vegas we'll be going up to Lovelock Nevada to visit my tribe, talk with some of the administrators there, and see about my enrollment. My tribe is 'between' enrollment officfers right now, so I might not get a lot done, but I want to meet some of the people there and whatnot, now that I don't have any real time schedule to meet (The only real way to have a vacation, btw).
Ok, I think that that is enough for now. I won't have much chance to update the pictures or this blog until I get to Vegas, so I wanted to give you an idea of what's been going on. Ok, I'm audi, Laguna Beach Awaits.
